The Indian IT ecosystem is on track for remarkable growth, with emerging technologies projected to fuel a 20% surge in new job opportunities in 2025, according to human resources platform FirstMeridian Business Services. Reflecting on 2024, the industry witnessed a 17% rise in employment opportunities, driven by rapid digital transformation and a growing demand for niche tech roles.
“After a subdued first half, the sector regained momentum. Looking ahead to 2025, we anticipate a 20% rise in demand for roles such as application developers, software engineers, DevOps engineers, and experts in AI, ML, and cybersecurity,” said Sunil Nehra, CEO, IT Staffing at FirstMeridian Business Services.
AI and Gen-AI: The Game Changers
Artificial Intelligence (AI), a driving force in 2024, is set to accelerate further in 2025. The generative AI (Gen-AI) sector alone is expected to create one million new jobs by 2028, significantly contributing to India’s GDP. Roles such as generative AI engineer, algorithm engineer, and AI security specialist are expected to see a 25–30% salary hike, especially for mid-level positions.
The demand for data-related roles like analysts, engineers, and scientists will also continue to rise, fueled by businesses expanding their digital infrastructure and innovating across industries.
A Booming Gig Economy and Upskilling Trends
The Indian IT gig economy is set to triple in size, employing 24 million people by 2030. This demand will be evenly distributed between tier I and tier II cities, as companies increasingly rely on gig workers for specialized expertise and adaptability.
“Flexible talent solutions are now a critical component of the evolving tech landscape, driving hiring trends toward niche roles and project-based engagements,” Nehra noted.
Upskilling is another significant focus for 2025, with enterprises and mid-sized companies expected to increase their upskilling budgets by 15–20%. Meanwhile, individuals are also investing in personal skill development to secure opportunities in high-demand fields like AI, ML, and cybersecurity.
Challenges on the Horizon
Despite its optimistic trajectory, the Indian IT sector still faces challenges, including talent shortages in emerging fields like AI and cybersecurity, along with the ripple effects of global economic uncertainties.
While initiatives like Digital India and Skill India have been instrumental, further efforts are needed to address cost pressures and skill gaps to sustain this growth phase, Nehra emphasized.

With sectors like BFSI, telecom, and global capability centers (GCCs) expanding their tech workforce, the Indian IT ecosystem is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s economic future. By 2030, GCCs alone are expected to employ 2.5 to 2.8 million professionals, solidifying India’s position as a global tech hub.
